SHELTER

The Island of Lindisfarne, [also known as Holy Island] just off the coast of Northumberland - famous for its gospels, St Cuthbert, and Polanski's Cul de Sac - can be reached at low tide via a causeway from the mainland.

In 2002 I started constructing a small stone shelter on the island's remote rocky northern shore. It has survived spring tides and winter storms and over the years has gained iconic status among islanders and visitors from various parts of the world as a public artwork, site specific installation, museum, shelter, shrine, and/or space for reverie, play, parties, sleeping and bird- and seal-watching. The interior is furnished with a book and pen, flotsam and jetsam, handmade artefacts and personal mementos left by visitors. It was made as an anonymous artwork and has become a collaborative, creative venture where those who visit, rest, muse or play leave their traces and thus play a part in the ongoing artwork.

Sally Madge, 2009

Sally has loaned a selection of objects to L-13 for the duration of the With or Without God exhibition. These are all made for, found and relate to the SHELTER on Holy Island and will be returned there after the exhibition.

The images here show the objects both in their natural envoironment and in the L-13 display cases.
