Safe European Home by Clem Fatale - Reconstructed and Presented by Charlotte Young
Safe European Home by Clem Fatale - Reconstructed and Presented by Charlotte Young

Inaccurately reconstructed from a photograph and drawings of the original sculpture, this piece is accompanied by sketches and documentation of the artist's life and work as follows:

1.
Safe European Home (Photograph)
Clem Fatale
1992

Fatale's only piece of work to be displayed publicly was shown at Head Gallery as part of the 'Come and Get It' exhibition, summer 1992. Constructed from a wooden chair, steel wool and later connected to a car battery, this was Fatale's take on the model of the electric chair.

2.
Safe European Home (Sketch)
Clem Fatale
c.1992

Fatale's sketches for Safe European Home, the final version of which was exhibited at Head Gallery, 1992.

Courtesy of Charlie Warfield

3.
Sketches for a work in progress
Clem Fatale
c.1992

Sketches for the work with which Fatale had intended to open the Mori Gallery, formerly a disused butcher's shop beneath his flat in East London. The drawing depicts a metal crate, constructed with the intent of suffocating the viewer who would be hermetically sealed within the structure.

Courtesy of Charlie Warfield

4.
Kings Butcher's Shop, Colborn Road (Photograph)
c.1992

Fatale lived in a small flat above the abandoned shop and aspired to open it as his own exhibition space. He and Warfield successfully squatted the premises, but his plans for the shop were never realised due to a lack of financial backing.

5.
The Hand of God (Photograph)
Clem Fatale
c.1990

A photograph of work in progress from his college years, The Hand of God demonstrates Fatale's early use of car batteries as a motif and of his interest in death.

6.
'Come and Get It', Head Gallery
July 1992

Press release, list of works and private view invitation card from 'Come and Get It' exhibition at Head Gallery, 1992. This was the first and only show that would feature Fatale's work.
